Who we are
Rutgers' student-led martial arts community since 2015.
RUMA was founded in 2015 to provide Rutgers students with a dedicated space for combat sports. What started as a small group of wrestlers has grown into a multi-discipline community covering boxing, jiu-jitsu, and Muay Thai.
Unlike commercial gyms, we are student-run. Our focus isn't on memberships, but on technical progression and creating a safe environment where students can test themselves without ego.
Today, we represent a diverse roster of athletes, from complete beginners to active amateur competitors, all training together under professional coaching.
We train hard but we take care of each other. Safety and mutual respect are the foundations of every practice.
Skill is built through repetition, not shortcuts. We value discipline and showing up over natural ability.
Nobody walks in knowing everything. We were all beginners once, and we help everyone find their footing.

Focused on the technical application of the hands. Beginners learn stance, the jab-cross-hook foundation, and head movement. Advanced members work on distance management, counter-punching, and strategic sparring sessions.

The cornerstone of grappling. We focus on freestyle and folkstyle takedowns, sprawls, and top control. Wrestling is essential for anyone looking to understand the full spectrum of modern MMA and ground transitions.

Focused on ground fighting and the technical "human chess" of submissions. Members learn fundamentals of leverage, guard passing, and joint locks. Our BJJ sessions provide a high-level environment for both self-defense and competitive rolling.

The "Art of Eight Limbs" utilizes fists, elbows, knees, and shins. Training covers basic striking mechanics, heavy bag work, and advanced clinch positioning. This discipline is excellent for conditioning and developing a versatile striking arsenal.
